“Worth” is difficult to wrap your mind around. It makes us immediately go into assessment-mode, trying to gauge what something costs, and what it would take to get it. We say things like “What is it worth to you?” to figure out what someone would give up to accomplish something. Or “It’s worth a whole lot…” A whole lot of what… of money. Time. Saving pennies. Sacrificing. A diamond necklace is WORTH thousands of dollars. True love is worth waiting for. A house is worth hundreds of thousands. When it comes to objects and worth, there is always some kind of exchange that happens.
That's not the case with the worth of a human. A savings bond might be worth $500, but a human life cannot be equated with the exchange of goods. They have value that is beyond a price, beyond an assessment, beyond evaluation based on anything other than the fact that they ARE. Existence is enough worth for humanity, because of one thing. Design. We are each created, given the stamp of approval by a perfect Designer. We are in his image, irrespective of what we look like, what we come from, or what we've been through, and you cannot remove the “brand” of our identity. Because of the Designer, and His standing in the universe (ahem, the universe He created), and because we are His design all that same value that He has is ascribed to us.
If you were to think right now what has the MOST worth to you, what would that be? Imagine the rarest diamond in the world is the Neptune Violet Diamond (or some other obscure kind of name that sounds at least mildly realistic) found in THE hardest place to travel to, dug up from staggering depths of the remotest cave on the earth. It’s a miracle people even knew this place existed! Scientists (credible ones whose opinions are beyond doubting!) can say with 100% certainty that this object literally fell from the sky eons ago, and that no matter on earth is like it. Furthermore, the quality of this diamond is so perfect, so exact, that it could never be replicated. Because of these factors (conveniently invented for this hypothetical scenario), the Neptune Violet Diamond could never have a price put on it. Simply because nothing we have, either in money or in possessions could ever possibly equal what this singular diamond is WORTH.
Humans are like that, only we’ve forgotten it. We are each priceless because we are worthy. Designed as a one-of-a-kind original by the perfect Creator. So worthy you could never pin a price tag on any human life. It is that very value, the nature of worth, that we seek to remind every man, woman, boy and girl. May we never forget it.
